Walk to UTOPIA

My friend asked me to teach her ten year old daughter English. I see a lot of teachers feel frustrated with kids being addicted to their smart phones, but I’ve never fought it. It’s a part of life now. Telling them to put their phones down and that back in the day we used to play in the woods wont work.

I told Noyda and her friend we could make money taking pictures of our walk to Utopia and posting them here. They liked the idea, so we grabbed our phones and selfie sticks and went on a photography/walk/English lesson.

I wanted to leave at noon, but we had to finish the Lao food her mom had cooked first, so we took most of these shots from around 13:30 to 15:00.

This was the first shot I took of the day. I told the girls we should take as many good pictures as we can, delete the bad ones, then compare. I thought that maybe they would get a few good shots that I could use.

The chics were separated by size. Putting the camera down with the stick helped get this close up of them.

This is the only shot from the girls I used. Even though they had an iPhone X and some new Huawei, I was able to get better shots with an old Samsung Galaxy J7 with a broken screen which I found in the trash.

We all tried our best to get the best shot of this relief.

Lighting and treating photography like an art still gets you better shots than the latest tech.

If you ever do come to Utopia, then you may get lost at this fork. This is Olive. She's a sweetheart.

There are plenty of signs leading you to Utopia.

Utopia is a great name and is where most people come when they first arrive in Luang Prabang. I was being bitten gently while trying to take this shot so that's why it's a bit blurry.

Looks like someone made a new friend.

There is a free place to study English on the way called @myLibrary. I forgot the rules to checkers, so I told the girls that the winner of rock paper scissors goes first and if your checkers piece makes it to the end, then it can go any direction. I haven't played checkers for over 30 years so I'm sure that's not how it works, but they had fun.

Welcome to Utopia. Everyone is here to chill and enjoy the river.

Utopia didn't pay their taxes so Uncle Sam sent them this notice.

I asked if I could lay down and relax too, but they said I wasn't cool enough yet.

He didn't mind the company though.

We ended the walk with strawberry ice cream cones.

Photography Tips:

☀️Submit to the sun! Nothing can provide better lighting than a clear day at noon.

📷Get close up! Make the photos feel 3D by having the camera focus on something very close while showing layers of blurred background.

✂️Cut, crop, and delete until you have ten good shots with unique proofread text.
