As many amateur and experienced photographers know capturing an image in the field or on location can be extremely difficult especially without knowledge of how to exercise proper technique or with a lack of capable equipment, capturing a dynamic image seems like something so difficult in degree that only professionals are able to do with ease. In my experience I have found that although at times this can be true, in most instances being properly prepared with knowledge of principals for dynamic lighting as well as developing an understanding of basic camera settings is key as the understanding of photographic techniques and can go very long way in taking a wannabe photographer from being a person who shoots a few photos in their spare time of friends and family as a hobbyist to the kind of person who plans when the sun is going to rise or set on a location all the way down to the minor details like realizing when the morning dew is going to be at its best moment to be captured on the surface of a fresh flower pedal or leaf.

Tip #1 Wake up early or be prepared around sunrise or sunset to shoot and use manual camera settings to achieve desired results. It goes without saying location and subject are key, proper planning and timing is also necessary. With this image as well as most other images I shoot, I rely on heavy DOF and IOS to paint as much detail on to an image sensor in a camera as possible! I used one kick light from a speed flash and a ring flash to capture the flower at the Montreal Botanical gardens!
