Bee Checking Day...
Today was bee checking day, the day we open up the hive to check if they're all okay...
I managed to get this great photo of them working hard, with their heads buried deep inside the honeycomb. What they've done here is quite interesting... all the yellow around the edges is capped honey. They have filled the honeycomb full of honey and then they put a thin wax capping over the top to hold all the honey in. But here in the center they have taken the capping off and extended the comb out a little further and they're now filling it with more honey.
I'm not sure why they're doing this since they're not running out of space and have several other frames that they could be working on... but I love this photo never the less.
The other exciting news is that they're finally starting to store pollen (they're the cells full of bright yellow). We've had a lot of brood (babies) and a lot of honey production but this is the first time we've seen them storing pollen. This can only be a good sign that the hive is getting stronger!
And just for fun... this is what it's like "BEEing" photo bombed by 3 bees! ; )
