Hilton Head Island, SC March 2017 Vacation Day 3 Part One

in #photography7 years ago

Our third day on Hilton Head Island we went to the Harbour Town Lighthouse Museum and The Stoney-Baynard Ruins.

The Harbour Town Lighthouse is located within the vacation rental community of Sea Pines.

The lighthouse has been open to the public since 1970, when its construction was completed, and you can visit it any day of the week between 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. It costs $3.75 per person to climb to the top of the lighthouse.

As you climb the 114 steps to the top of the lighthouse, you can stop to look at many of the historical relics and photos that line the walls. These vestiges make up what is considered the Harbour Town Lighthouse Museum. As you ascend the stairs within the lighthouse, you are actually taking a self-guided tour of the museum. Some of the relics in the Harbour Town Lighthouse Museum include photographs from the Civil War era, artifacts from as early as 3000 BC, and many other items that display the rich history of Hilton Head and the Harbour Town Lighthouse.

Once you climb to the peak of the lighthouse, you’ll be amazed by the panoramic view of Hilton Head Island and its surrounding water, marsh, fairway, and harbor. After you’ve had some time to take in the beautiful view from the lighthouse’s balcony, you can head over to the “Shop at the Top,” the Harbour Town Lighthouse’s official gift shop which boasts Hilton Head’s finest collection of handcrafted crystal keepsakes.

Before hitting out next destination of the day we let the kids play in the small park that had several Live Oak's going inside it.

For the rest of the day we hit up a couple places I found on atlasobscura.com

Just a 5 minute drive from the lighthouse are the Stoney-Baynard Ruins.

The tabby ruins of the historic Baynard estate, which includes the main house as well as slave quarters, have been preserved at Sea Pines and are currently listed on the National Register of Historic Sites.

Originally built by Captain Jack Stoney in the 1790s, the Baynard house was once a grand antebellum plantation house overlooking the Calibogue Sound. Legend has it that the house changed hands when Stoney lost a poker game to William Baynard in 1840. Baynard, a successful Sea Island Cotton plantation owner, raised four children at the mansion with his wife, Catherine.

When the Union forces invaded Hilton Head Island in 1861, the Baynards evacuated the property. The residence was raided and served as Union headquarters during the Civil War before being burned.

Numerous ghost stories and reports of paranormal activity surround this historic site on Hilton Head Island. Over the years, some visitors claim to have seen the ghost of William Baynard and even his entire funeral procession — wandering the site after dark.

Located off of Plantation Drive in Sea Pines, Baynard Ruins Park is on the right just after passing Baynard Cove Road and Marsh Drive.

I love Hilton Head! Is Greg Russell still performing?

It's a pretty awesome place! I've never heard of Greg Russell, but a quick search said he was still performing last year. Maybe i know a song of his and just didn't know the name?

Highly doubt it. He is a small town guy famous in Harbor Town. He would play 2-3 nights a week right near the lighthouse. His music is great for kids haha
