Helianthus schweinitzii, commonly known as Schweinitz's sunflower, is one of the rarest and most fascinating members of the sunflower family. This perennial plant, native to the Piedmont region of North and South Carolina, is notable not only for its vibrant yellow blooms but also for its limited distribution and endangered status. Named after the botanist Lewis David von Schweinitz, who first discovered the species in the early 19th century, this sunflower is a symbol of botanical resilience and environmental conservation.
Physical Characteristics
Helianthus schweinitzii is a tall, striking sunflower that can reach heights of 6 to 10 feet under optimal conditions. It has a rough, hairy stem with long, narrow, lance-shaped leaves that are often dark green and covered with short, stiff hairs.
