Beautiful Yellow Colour Sunflower
The sunflower is a plant renowned for its striking appearance and multifaceted significance. Belonging to the Asteraceae family, sunflowers are native to North America and have been cultivated for thousands of years for their beauty, utility, and nutritional value. They are easily recognizable by their large, bright yellow flower heads that follow the sun's movement across the sky, a phenomenon known as heliotropism.
Botanical Description
Sunflowers are annual plants with a distinctive growth pattern. They can reach heights of up to 3 meters or more, depending on the variety. The plant has a coarse, hairy stem and broad, rough leaves that are arranged alternately along the stem. The most striking feature is the flower head, which can reach diameters of up to 30 centimeters.
Flower Structure
The sunflower's "flower" is actually a composite flower head composed of numerous small flowers arranged on a receptacle. The outer part consists of sterile ray florets, which are the large, petal-like structures that attract pollinators. The center, or disk, is filled with numerous tiny, tubular disk florets that are fertile and produce seeds.
Seed Production
Each sunflower head can contain hundreds to thousands of seeds. The seeds are usually encased in a black or striped hull and are rich in oil, making them an important agricultural product. The seeds are often consumed as snacks, used in cooking, or processed to extract sunflower oil.
