The Gnu
The Gnu (Swartwildebees) is one of the most abundant of herbivores in Africa. Found in their migrations in the Savannas of Tanzania and Kenya, these animals make up millions for the great Masai Mara Migration in Tanzania and Kenya. Their agility and endurance allow them to continue the migration year in and year out. Thousands of them die each year during the massive migration, falling pray not only to Africa's big cat predators but also crocodiles and some die during the crossings of the many river crossings. Trampled and many die because of fatal injuries.
In Botswana the Migration has been inhibited by the big cattle fences built to control foot and mouth disease. In the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park that forms part of the Kalahari desert, these animals survive in one of the most hostile and arid parts of Southern Africa. They also make for some fantastic photographic subjects.
