Taj Mahal voted as world's second best heritage site

Over 8 million people per year visit this great mausoleum, a true monument to love, constructed by the Shah Jahan while mourning the death of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal.

Located some five kilometres northeast of the Taj Mahal,

the Ram Bagh is the oldest Mughal garden in India. The first Mughal emperor, Babur, built it in 1528. Crossed by pathways and canals, the garden is designed in the Persian tradition to represent the Islamic ideal of paradise: an abundant garden through which rivers flow.

The current name of the garden is a corruption of the original Persian ‘Aram Bagh’, which means ‘Garden of Rest’. It is also variously known as the Bagh-I Nur Afshan, the ‘Light-Scattering Garden’, and Aalsi Bagh, the ‘Lazy Garden’. The surviving architecture in the now-unkempt garden dates to the reign of Jahangir.
