Light and Shadows in Small Town America . Downtown Overland . Original Photography

"Overland, A Beautiful Place to Live." Once upon a time the streetcars rolled through town. Now a new nostalgia vibrates through the sleep quiet suburb outskirt of St Louis.

I once asked my mother about the town my father grew up in. She said, "Overland, that's where all the Fonzi's lived. Leather jackets and motorcyles. Your father didn't fit in."

Father went on to caddy, go to college, join the Navy, work a variety of jobs and ended up Mayor of Florissant Mo, just north of the Airport. But Overland has always been his hometown. It's where his mother and father raised a family in a humble blue house a short walk from Downtown Overland.

Overland is still a blue collar, motorcycle riding neighborhood. The local diner sill serves dollar coffees and breakfast til 1pm. The Insurance Salesman also sells Antiques. A farmers market pops up in the summer time. And every bar has a pool table to compete with the Pool Hall up the road.

At first glance one might not see much in this sleepy suburb south of the airport. But taking one's time to walk the sidewalk, it is no different than any place one calls home. It is beautiful in it's simplicity. It shimmers in the sun and is blessed by blue skies. The people smile walking by. Friends wave at each other from their cars. The A& W Rootbeer Stand is no longer there. But the Woofies Hotdog shack still is. Homes are clean. Mechanic shops' parking lots are full. The schools are well funded and the church bells of All Souls still ring. For over 60 years, Overland Missouri was a beautiful place to live for my beloved Gramma Jo. And now it will bless my cousins moving in as I move on. Life is simple, original, and real. Light and shadow still carve a charm across the streets.

Perhaps I'll share simply photos in a post someday. Just a photograph that makes a $100-$1000. But even then, it will not come close to the true value of these photographs, of my memories, and of the people that bless this town.

Hey I just have to say that is one nice looking bike!

Thank You!

This totally reminds me of the small town in Iowa where my Grandma lived. The dolls in the window, especially. Nostalgic post. Very sweet.

interesting. yes. it feels like small town but is just south of the airport. drive in any direction and one starts to hit more city. those funny little doll stores always crack me up. I mean, the Subway Sandwhich went out of business but Dolls carry on. lol

I like the mural of the barn with the sun shining down...sheds an interesting 'light' on the wall.

That's small town USA right there!! Hopefully soon we will be able to get up to STL to hang out at an improv show!
