Full Circle Rainbow

in #photography10 years ago (edited)

This is not camera trickery, I seen a full circle rainbow skiing in Switzerland. Thought I would share this photo and hopefully get a reaction from someone close to the famous 'triple rainbow guy'

Love this guy!

The natural shape of a rainbow is a circle, the higher you are the more likely you are to see one :-)

Nice. Thanks for that CG. After looking that up, your completely right, the bottom part of a Rainbow is more often than not blocked by the horizon, so we only see half, which is why being high up increases your chances of seeing a full circle rainbow.

Interesting.
This is not a "normal" rainbow - normally, you are looking at rain falling some distance in front of you while the sun is behind you. The raindrops in front of you work like miniature prisms, reflecting the sunlight back into your eyes at different angles, depending on the wavelength.

In your picture you're looking right into the sun, and the rainbow seems to be caused by perhaps ice crystals blown across the landscape.

Cool. Thanks for that. There was a fine mist of ice crystals when I took that photo. Learn some new everyday.

Circle rainbow! ALL THE WAY AROUND!

Pretty amazing with the sun in the middle.
