Wild Flowers of Current River, August 2016

in #photography8 years ago

American Bellflower (Campanulastrum americanum) - Bellflower Family - The Mesquakies used leaf tea to treat coughs and tuberculosis and the crushed root to treat whooping cough.

Jewelweed (Impatiens capensis) - Touch-me-not family - Dew often accumulates in droplets on leaves, giving rise to the name Jewelweed. The Potawatomi and settlers applied the juice of the plant to relieve the itch of poison ivy and stinging nettle.

Pinkweed (Polygonum pensylvanixcum) - Smartweed family - Prehistoric food source, this plany has long been eaten as cooked greens, but some species are bitter, giving rise to the name Smartweed.

Monkey Flower (Mimulus alatus) - Snapdragon family - The common name refers to the flower's resemblance to a grinning monkey's face.

These are just a few of the beautiful flowers blooming along the Current River during summer. I hope you enjoyed the photos and info! Thanks for looking!
