“When we talk about "the following weeks," we mean something that follows us, that comes from behind, not from in front of us. So the future is behind us?

And another thing. We talk as if we think the future is something that will come sooner or later, where we are now, while the past drifts further and further away from us.

We say that 'the time will come' (that is, here) and that the years of our youth have gone (that is, away from here).

The incongruousness of this language can not be overestimated; even if it were reasonable to see the past and the future in terms of space, then the future would surely be a place to which we will sooner or later go, and not something that will come to us where we are now.

We should also speak of leaving the past where we once were, not of a past that has left where we are now.”
