Hippos: Hearing through the Jaw!

in #photography5 years ago (edited)

Hippos are really cool because they can communicate underwater and through air simultaneously. In air, sound is transmitted through their nostrils but in water it is transmitted through a fatty area around their neck and vocal chords in the form of vibrations. Hippos detect these vibrations through a thin portion of their jaw that is connected to the middle ear. When swimming hippos listen to these sounds through their jaws (since their external ears close when under water)!!! The vibrations then travel through the body and into the ear, where it is translated into sound (Barklow 2004).hippo.jpg
