Tuxedo Princess
The Tuxedo Princess was moored under the Tyne Bridge for many years after it’s sister ship the Tuxedo Royale was towed away. I believe the Tuxedo Royale was there for longer under the Tyne Bridge, but I could be wrong. The Tuxedo Princess was also bigger than it’s sister ship the Royale.
They were both originally car ferries and both were turned into nightclubs. One of the biggest crowd pullers to the venues were that they were on a very noticeable tilt, which made those drunken wobbly steps even more interesting and that the deck which was the main dance floor had the car turntable spinning as a continuous revolving dance floor (getting on and off that spinning dance floor was sometimes a challenge)
At the time that area of the Gateshead Quayside where the ship was moored had a number of other venues to go to also, Buffalo Joe’s and Baja Beach club. Revellers would walk across the swing bridge and that small area of the Gateshead Quayside was busy for a good while.
Since all those venues have closed, the boat towed away and the quayside less popular as venues have now opened more central in Newcastle the buildings are now in disrepair and derelict even.
Some great times were had down there.
