Lucky Hearts For Any Occasion

On our way home from the pharmacy the other day my wife said she needed pots for her plants and asked me to be on the look out for some garden and flower stores open in spite of the Extended Community Quarantine, ECQ, enforced in our city. It was a long shot as this type of business is considered non-essential and were ordered to close during the quarantine period. Anyway, I passed by a mall which I knew had garden and flower stalls situated in the parking lot. Most of these stalls have hired hands who sleep there during the night and sell during the day. We hit pay dirt! They were open, at least 3 or 4 stalls, and so my wife started to shop for pots. Meanwhile, I did some looking around and saw these plants. It's the first time I saw these and I thought I'd share it with you.

Lovely aren't they? So what are they called? Hoya Kerrii!

Hoya kerrii is a species of Hoya native to the south-east of Asia. Its eponymous collector is Arthur Francis George Kerr, British physician and botanist. As the thick leaves are heart-shaped, the plant is sometimes named "lucky-heart". Wikipedia

Hoya kerrii, also called Sweetheart plant, are tropical succulent vines that are often cultivated and sold as leaf cuttings. They are relatively slow-growing but prefer a hanging basket, where they eventually become a bushy mass of green hearts. They may not bloom for a few years, so be patient. Keep them root-bound in a smallish pot to shorten the blooming time.

What an amazing flower. Perfect for Valentine's Day or even for any occasion. When all this pandemic challenge is behind us, I definitely will be buying a few to include with our other indoor plants. Hopefully make another post as well too.
