(A Real) Bird of Paradise

Yesterday I posted what I thought was a Bird of Paradise flower from my wife's garden but turned out to be a False Bird of Paradise. This morning as I was walking along our neighborhood I noticed a clump of overgrown stalks and leaves with yellowish orange flowers. This was along the road 4 houses away from mine. Guess what they are?

The real thing! A bona fide, true blue (or should I say orange?) Bird of Paradise! And I have been walking past these plants almost everyday when I go jogging in the morning and not notice them until now. My perception of things have really changed since I have taken an interest in my wife's garden. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about this flower:

Strelitzia is a genus of five species of perennial plants, native to South Africa. It belongs to the plant family Strelitziaceae. A common name of the genus is bird of paradise flower / plant, because of a resemblance of its flowers to birds-of-paradise. In South Africa it is commonly known as a crane flower and is featured on the reverse of the 50 cent coin. It is the floral emblem of the City of Los Angeles; two of the species, Strelitzia nicolai and Strelitzia reginae, are frequently grown as house plants.

Here's a picture of the clump of stalks and leaves I mentioned earlier.

It's like hitting a jackpot to realize this was just along the road, unattended and unnoticed. Well here's to its just rewards - recognition and appreciation.

Is there a common rule to follow when referring to a flower as either he or she? I noticed you use he for my succulent and she for this bird of paradise. Is it the color? Like if it is dark it's a he and when it is fair or bright it's a she?

I don’t even know how to make excuses😁 rather, I start from the names :) bird - she :) he is a knight :) although if he is succulent :) but if he is eheveriya-it😁
