Supercars Down The Coast - A Photo Essay

in #photography7 years ago

To start this article off with, let's get one important thing out of the way - I don’t own a supercar (unless my Forza Motorsport 6 garage counts), nor does anyone in my immediate family. However, being a natural-born petrolhead, I look for any excuse to be around cars, no matter what category they fall in. From small local shows featuring junkers worth next to nothing, to million-dollar exotics on parade around a track - sign me up! It was thanks to this obsession that I found myself jumping out of bed early on a Saturday morning to go and catch the sights and sounds of a supercar breakfast run.

I'll throw in a paragraph or two during this article, but for the most part, I think the pictures do all of the talking. So, sit back, relax, take your time, and feast your eyes...

His and hers - this husband and wife combo each have their own R35 GTR, presumably to stop one another from getting jealous?

Downforce for days - the new Porsche GT3 RS certainly delivers.

Another family combo, this time father (Aston Martin), and son (Audi R8).

The meeting point for this breakfast run was at a petrol station on the south coast, where after a quick drivers briefing, the convoy would depart for the hallowed grounds of Dezzi Raceway - a private racetrack situated on the outskirts of Port Shepstone. Usually, this drive would take just over an hour on a good day, but once we heard the news that the driver of an Audi R8 had been arrested for doing 190kmh in a 120kmh zone, it was clear that they were aiming to do the drive in a new record time.

Nissan R35 GTR, featuring a body kit I've never seen before.

New Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. I'm not such a fan of these new versions - it just looks too soft. But then again, I can't afford this car, so who am I to judge?

Audi R8 V10 vs Audi R8 V8 - who will win?

Once everyone had arrived at the track with no further arrests, it was time for a mid-morning brunch, followed by an open track session, where all drivers could take their time and experiment with their cars in a reasonably safe environment. Remarkably, there were zero incidents on the track, with most of the drivers choosing to be rather restrained in their outings. However, a shout out must be given to the owner of the orange Porsche GT3 RS, who was thrashing his car to the limit around the track. Certainly not a garage queen then...

Also, a further shout out to the owner of the Audi R8 who was arrested, and then somehow still made his way to the track in time for a few laps. Now that's dedication.

Audi R8 heading into one of the most challenging parts of the track - the "mineshaft" (also, how's that for a backdrop?)

Can you tell I really like this car? The Porsche GT3 RS tackling a 50m elevation drop through the "rollercoaster" corners - not an issue for this incredible machine.

This rare Aston Martin DB9 Bond Edition saw no track time, but it still made for a pretty sight in the pits.

Keeping the exotics on their toes was this Nissan R34 GTR, proving that you don't need huge power to set some impressive lap times.

And just like that, it was time to stroll through the car park one last time, and then hop in my entirely blasé car for the journey back home. While I still may be very far away from ever owning my own exotic, mingling among them for a few hours does give an extra boost of inspiration (and motivation) to hopefully be able to purchase my own one day. It'll look great in a garage, along with a Nissan R34 GTR and 1967 Mustang. But until then...I'll keep dreaming.

Man what you shoot is truly car porn. So hot! I am not sure I can put my finger on it but something about this one really made it stand out to me:

I think maybe it is that the framing is pulled out far enough that you can really get that sense of the s curve in the track and also the bokeh gives that sense of speed while the car is just so crisply and perfectly in focus. Interesting composition as well, seems to kind of break some of the "rules" but this is the one that instantly drew me in. Impressed with your work, as always. Much love - Carl

Thanks for the constructive comment @carlgnash - glad to see you're sticking around :)

In terms of that shot, here's a quick behind the scenes look. I was roughly 80m away from the car (see screenshot below for positioning info), and took quite a few from this angle, but like you said, the composition may not be "traditional", however it still works. There's no better feeling than nailing a good motion shot!

Thanks again!

Oh cool this is awesome to see, thanks! This gives a great perspective on what we are looking at here.

Dat ass <3 Stunning shots buddy, reminded me when I saw the brand new R8 in port for the first time. :) Maan I can't wait for petrol season to begin. Resteem well earned my friend. Steem on!

Thanks for the comment and resteem @warrkin! Have a shoot planned for this evening also - involving a certain car from @nelkeljdm - so will hopefully be able to deliver a few more photos for you to look at tomorrow morning :)

@warrkin It's going to be epic! I'll make sure @garethb includes the nudes too.

@nelkekjdm, looks like I'll have to bring my zoom lens now, for the... smaller details.

Why do you think I own so many cars, have to compensate somewhere!

Hehehehe lucky you, I have to be satisfied with Garett 16 and a diesel :D aight, looking forward!
