Supercar Sunday: A Photo Essay - Durban, South Africa

in #photography6 years ago

Supercar meets are quite frequent in this corner of the world, which many people might find surprising as South Africa is often considered a "poor" country. Entire clubs and events are dedicated to cars that are out of reach for the majority of us regular folk, which is why I make a point of attending as many public gatherings as I can - it's good to be in the presence of success, with my Canon in tow (obviously).

A future classic in my eyes - the intimidating Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

Fortunately, I recently heard of one of these "gatherings", and made a point to venture out on my Sunday morning to go find some supercars to shoot. As we're now slowly seeping into the winter months, the sun is rising later, and there's a definite chill in the air. While I'm not bothered by cold, the later sunrise certainly makes for lovely early morning light - provided you can capture it correctly.

With our brief intro out the way, I'll do the best thing now and let my photos do the talking from here on. Make sure to let me know in the comments below which was your favourite!

Porsche 996 GT3, featuring some lovely aforementioned early morning glow.

The lone Aston Martin in the line up

Fortunately, that Mercedes van wasn't part of the final run

Nothing better than some good carbon fibre on the back of a Porsche. Also, look how glossy that paint still is.

Always a looker, the Ferrari F430 has some fine design details.

No supercar run would be complete without a Nissan GTR in the mix. It's almost as if the owner is just challenging the more expensive cars to take him on (look at the registration, it says IDAREU)

Ferrari is no doubt the brand of choice for these guys, with this mint F430 joining the line up a bit later.

Can you tell I love this Porsche? While it may be the "ugly duckling" 996 version, the GT3 variant is still something to fear.

However, a Ferrari soon pitched up to give the Porsche something to think about. Which would you take?

The fisheye had to be used at least once right?

Eventually, things were starting to wrap up at the starting point, and the drivers started firing their engines up. Their final destination for breakfast was over 100km away in a different city, and I wasn't prepared to chase them that far in a much slower car. However, I had a friend in attendance who offered me the chance to ride shotgun in the back of his Mercedes-Benz for a bit of the trip, and would then return me to the starting point.

This BMW i8 joined just as the convoy departed. While it may have the looks, it didn't have the sound to really fit in.

Interesting colour choice on the newer 911, and look at the passenger giving a friendly thumbs up.

IMG_0835.jpg
For no apparent reason, the passenger in this 911 elected to sit in the back, and leave the front passenger seat empty. Weird.

We only followed the convoy for about 15km before turning around, but we covered that distance in a record time - maybe driving slightly over the legal limit. Just...slightly. Anyway, I returned home feeling satisfied with that mornings haul of images and experiences. I mean, taking photos surrounded by supercars - what's not to like?

Thanks for looking!

Nice shots Gareth I bet it was a fantastic experience, you don’t see many super cars where I live, mostly American muscle. Well there was a guy with a Ferrari in town but he put it in a ditch 😂

@jasonwhite where have you been man? I miss seeing you pop up on my posts

I have been sick 🤒 for a few weeks, workload is also up so not so much spare time 🙁
It’s almost warm here, time to roll out the Brap Brap machine and deafen my neighborhood 😆😈

Move to sunny South Africa and you can brap all year round! Hell, I just brapped an hour ago!
