📷 Reptiles in the Aquarium Berlin #9: The Venomous Beaded Lizard! (English/German)

in #photography8 years ago

In this part I will show you a very special kind of lizard: The beaded Lizard!

The frightening colouration of the Beaded Lizard with its many contrasts is an effective warning signal. They are the only lizards that produce a venom in their submandibular glands which is delivered into the wound when they bite. The primarily crepuscular and nocturnal animals feed on small birds, rodents and reptiles. The females bury up to 12 eggs in moist soil; the baby lizards hatch after five or six months.

Cool. The most venomous of the beaded lizards is the Gila monster. Update - monitor lizards are now classified as venomous. Their saliva contains a deadly bacteria that is strong enough to kill a water buffalo in a matter of hours or days. The Kamodo dragon will bite it's victim and then stalk it until the prey is too weak to defend itself or dies. Then a whole group of Kamodos will have a feast.

Thank you for the information @roswellrockman!

That is a very strange looking creature!

@kus-knee (The Old Dog)

Yes it´s really strange
