The Grid (Original photography and poetry)steemCreated with Sketch.

I took this photo of a power transmission tower recently. Current events and natural disasters, hurricanes and flooding, caused me to reflect on the frailty of our power grid and how it is a metaphor for societies.

How would we fare as a collective under prolonged power outages? Would we go down as well, just like the power?

I'm not certain I really want to know the answer. Below are my thoughts on the matter written in prose poetry.

The Grid

Interconnected
Like lines of a circuit board
Power transmission along a thin copper strand
Our nation linked like grains in the same pile of sand

Take too many grains away and they all sink down
Our dependency on one and other highlighted starkly
Like a metaphor for life the grid speaks loudly
Learn to get along with each other or pay the price profoundly

Life without power for day or week is like a camping trip
Families happily lock arms in huddles keeping warm while telling stories
The thought of extended and widespread blackout however makes one hold their breath
No longer a walk in the park it is a matter of life or death

As systems of electrical infrastructure need to be robust
So does our systems of communication and values among ourselves
A culture of compassion and understanding leading to rational action
Is the only thing that will save a humanity thrust into darkness and isolation

Hi this is a great looking photograph and a cute little poetry, I like it , Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for the great feedback. Much appreciated! :)

I believe the answer is clear, if a major power outrage happened people in suburban eras would still survive to some extent, but the toll on peoples lives in major cities would be catastrophic. I am talking millions in a matter of weeks. That is how fragile our society is even though we tend to think we own it.

I tend to agree with you. Major cities would be horrible places to be. I've always wondered though what constitutes a major city. Population sizes vary in different countries and what's consider large in one country is a small town to another.

I believe, you can put it like this. If you cut supply to supermarkets and the city is starving in three days it can be called a major city :)

That's a very simple and logical way to look at it.

In the final end it all comes to a very simple things i believe...
