I wonder if those were the guilty party this year... My parents' garden almost looked skeletal by the end of summer, with all the holes chewed through everything. Nice looking butterflies, though!

It very likely could have been the larvae of these guys. They can do a lot of damage. There is a product called thuricide that is an organic naturally occurring bacteria that I used to spray on my garden plants to help keep them under control.
