Back Roads Drive: Winter Snowfall (Original Photography)

in #photography5 years ago

Howdy,

Southern Minnesota has been getting its fair share of winter weather this month! The meteorologists had forseen a warm, snowy winter. We did have absurdly warm weather in January, but February has been another story altogether. At least they got the snowy part right!

Getting the Drift

This was the view on Thursday evening. We received another significant snowfall, accumulating to about four inches (10cm) and then the winds picked up. The visibility quickly dropped. Naturally, I went out to get some photos.

Snowy Blur

Depending on the area, visibility varied quite a bit. Here, the blowing snow obscures the horizon, but was less turbulent by the road I took the photo from. It almost appears to be a fog except that, where fog seems to mute and desaturate colors, the tiny ice crystals that make up snow seem to reflect, refract, and amplify them. These pastel blues, oranges, and reds are the natural color of the scene.

Drifting Snow

Here's a view of the road I was on. It had been plowed, but the drifting snow made it hard to see where the road was. There were a couple vehicles in the ditch. One, a pickup truck, was at such an angle that the rear wheels were about a foot off the ground. I was a bit more cautious.

The majority of the weekend was clear and sunny, but we received another six inches of fresh snow today.

Hats off to you for braving the cold for those awesome photos!! We are having sunny skys and no wind, but dang it's cold. We are feeding the eagles and my eyes were tearing SO bad that I couldn't see :)

Ouch! Yeah, it's been very cold. You missed out on the wonderful polar vortex, though! Apparently, we are also supposed to have two more snowstorms move through next week. Just what we need!

Enough is enough, right? These are all really great pictures but we're getting more snow tonight and then another storm over the weekend. I am really ready for this to be over. I know you are too!

Wow. Why did @abusereports flag your comment?!

I just woke up to a message that morning classes are cancelled yet again, due to the snow. My student have missed a full week of class, now!

Sorry. It is all part of a bot war, and is not personal. One of the bots chose to reward me by upvoting my comments, which has been really nice and adds up to a lot of votes in a day. But his enemy Bots follow him around and downvote his votes. At first I was offended by it, but now just veiw it as juvenile games being played.

Snow day! It is just getting started here, maybe an inch on the ground and still snowing and supposed to change to freezing rain. Will you have to make up class hours like the high schools do?

Mankato, MN seems to attract storms of all types. There's actually a bulls-eye over us on the precipitation forecast map right now.

We probably won't have to make up the time, because they have been cancelling just morning classes. There's a technicality that doesn't count morning cancellations ad days off, so they may be able to avoid an extended school year. Of course, the class I teach is in the morning and my students have now missed an entire week's worth of class.

That's a shame about the whole bot war. I actually liked Steemit much more before tbots became so heavily involved. Well, hopefully these two will work things out.

The snow is coming down pretty heavy again. The temp is 33° so we keep bouncing back and forth between rain and snow. The tree branches are all coated with ice again.

This bot war has been going on since I joined Steem. When you have a ringside seat like I have had for the past 2 weeks it is really difficult not to choose sides. But they are both too big and powerful and the only option is to stay out of it and keep your head down. I hope their battlefield shifts soon.

It was up to 33° here, but kept coming as snow. It's like shoveling cement, now. If expect to see snowmen, if it weren't the mobile phone era.

My 16 year old grandson and his friends went sledding today. No school, teachers Inservice. You may find a Snowman or two!

Howdy sir fotosdenada! wow those are some really good snow pictures to let people in the Deep South know what it's like up there! Cold, wind and snow. and more snow!

And more on the way! We're only a few inches short of the snowiest February on record. It looks like we might break that record.

wow! yes sir you have a long way to go till the end of the month so you can easily break the record!
What IS the record anyway, like 10 feet?
