Airpower 2016 in Zeltweg Austria

Last year i visited the Airshow "Airpower" wich is organized by the austrian Airforces and different aerobatic squadron from all over the world. It is a very nice show with a lot of different featured Airplanes and helicopters. Some of the Planes are also presented on th ground so you can take a deeper look at it. It was a very big and crowded show in 2016, i am already looking forward to visit it the next time it is organized. Because the military took part in the organisationed it was very streight and well organized. This year i was at the "Austrian Airfest" and it was caotic if you compare these two. But you can't compare a privat airshow to a military organized one.

Good Security

Zeltweg is about 200 km away from Linz and the Car trip to this place took me about 3 hours because of a traffic jam i was stuck in for an hour. In Zeltweg i meet with 2 Friends who also visited the event but got there by bus. At the entrance we where searched for weapons and the military officers took a deep look at our camera equipment. Security was very important there and they really sorted out all possible kinds of weapons like knifes or nailfiles like on an airport.

Terrain

The terrain of the Airshow in Krems is big enought and there are very nice and different places which are exposed and higher than the runway for the airplanes. So you had a very nice view and it was perfect for photographers to take some nice shots. Most of the terrain could be visited by foot only the runway and some hangars where closed, so it was a very nice experience just to walk around and take a close look at the airplanes and helicopters.

my Equipment back then

In 2016 i didn't have my 150-600mm Sigma lens so i had to use my Nikon 55-300mm lens to take the shots. Of course my Nikon D5100 was on my side. I also had my 18-105mm Nikon lens with me but i didn't use it because mostly i had to zoom in as much as possible to ges some reasonable shots. Because of the fast moving airplanes i didn't use a tripod. Stefan a friend of mine had his 150-600mm Tamron lens and his gimbal mounted on his monopod.

The Show

The Airshow featured a buch of nice manneuvers from different aerobatic squadrons, i liked the "Frecce Tricolori" from italy the most, but also the spanish, the swiss and american squadrons where very impressive. There where also helicopter shows and different shows powerd by Red Bull. The Planix Team had a very nice glider. There where different Topics on different shows, some where military other civil scenarios.

Evacuation scenario

The military helicopters performed a evacuation scenario where they assumed a evacuation of a very injured person in difficult terrain.

force kidnapped Airplane to land

The Austrian Airforce showd a scenario where they forced a kidnapped airplane to land on a airport of their choice. In this Scenario they nedd at least 2 Eurofighter Typhoon to forcethe kidnapped airpane to land. This was very impressive because you could see how fast and especially how slow the Eurofighter still can fly without loosing the flow so they can still fly at a very low speed. One Eurofighter was always flying a litte behind and above the kidnapped airplane and the other fighter tried to get contact to the pilot of the kidnapped machine by flying either on the left or the right side of the kidnapped plane.
