Alabama Hills in California shot with my DJI Drone [OC][3992x2992]
Sun setting behind the Sierra Nevada Mountains
The Alabama Hills were on my must see list for quite some time. I finally made it down there last April and it lived up to all the hype. Mt Whitney, the tallest peak in this shot is also the tallest mountain in the lower 48 states in the USA at 14,505 feet (4,421 meters). When you look at that mighty wall of mountains it’s easy to understand why this is a desert. Most storms here come from the pacific ocean to the west, and this wall of mountains stops them in their tracks. On the other side of those mountains is a very lush forest, and home to the Giant Soquoia Redwood trees. The contrast of landscapes in this area is extreme. If you keep going east from here you hit another mountain range and beyond that is death valley.
In an effort to provide more value to my posts I am providing the original straight from camera image as a comparison. Shooting into the sun is a challenge but I normally lean towards an under exposed shot. Reason being the sky around the sun is going to be so light that it is out of range and will just be recorded as white. You will never be able to re-create those lost details. Recovering shadow detail can be a lot more forgiving. I use Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop for processing.
