I have had to put straps on my bird feeder with the peanuts. Without the straps, the squirrels and raccoons in the area will find a way to send the feeder crashing to the ground.
Squirrels and raccoons can be very clever when it comes to food, especially peanuts.
I only fill the bird feeder with peanuts once a week. Otherwise, like you said, all I am doing is feeding the squirrels and raccoons. I have even had possums eating peanuts out of the feeder.
