The turtles have a number on their back and they seem to be participating in competitions, but this is just a marking by age and breed.

If I knew about this I would have had my turtle compete. he used to run everywhere his name was Uguei like the turtle from kingfu panda.

They're so cute! And I'm pretty sure there were probably racing tortoise competitions at one stage somewhere.
Are turtles and tortoises the same thing over there? Over here we seem to differentiate turtles and tortoises by whether they have feet or flippers (so these ones would be tortoises) :)
I really didn't know this feature of turtles/tortoises in English, but in Spanish they are called tortugas in both cases :)

Yes, it was entertaining. Wet the concrete, draw a big circle and dump the snails in the middle & they are off racing!
