The lemon balm

in #photography8 years ago

Lemon balm or as it is scientifically called "Melissa officinalis" is a unique plant. It belongs to the family Lamiaceae and can reach heights of growth of up to 150 cm. Lemon balm came originally from the eastern Mediterranean area, but is now also found in Central, Southern and Eastern Europe. The smell of this plant is very similar to lemon and it is a popular spice and medicinal plant. The leaves contain essential oil and have a calming and anxiolytic effect. From this plant a delicious tea can be obtained, but it is possible to extract the essential oils as well.

These leaves looks so much like what I know is called mint . Is it perhaps the same plant by a different name. Lovely capture of the little insect on the leaf.

Mint and lemon balm really look very similar. Both plants belong to the family Lamiaceae. A characteristic feature is the lemony smell, which is lacking in mint. Below is a picture of the mint attached and thank you very much for the kind feedback!
