On my trip to Antarctica I was lucky enough to snap some beautiful pics.
While watching some humpbacks bubble feed all around us they would pop up with a tail fluke that was met with OOO's and AHHHH's .
Bubble feeding is when one humpback goes deep under water and proceeds to blow bubbles in a circular fashion making a complete circle. As the bubbles rise , it pushes all the krill up to the surface with it. Another whale will come up and follow the rising bubbles. In one massive swoop , the whale opens his mouth as he reaches the surface Ingesting thousands of liters of water and all the krill which is filtered through baleen . These whales would do this for hours when the krill is plentiful. It was an amazing thing to behold.

Now i know this will sound a little crazy , but i am 100% sure whales have a sense of humor. While in the zodiac boat watching these majestic behemoths feed and play something happened that made me laugh to the point of tears and scare the wits out of the guide who was driving the boat. As we were watching them bubble feed, all of a sudden in front of our zodiac one huge bubble pops us . Just to be clear , this bubble was just under a meter in diameter ( that is nearly 3 feet for you non metrics). A second later another ... then another ... about 4 .... circling our boat. That is when our guide went into full panic mode. Starting the motor as fast as he could. All while another bubble or two came up. He gets the boat in gear and takes off. As we leave the one more bubble comes up and then no more. At this point I go into full tears in my eyes laughing till my stomach hurts. The whale was playing a joke on us. They are not stupid by any stretch. That whale knew fully well that we were right in the middle of its bubble circle. What really was impressive was that they could in fact be precise with their bubbles from way deep . I can only imagine how the whales laughed under the water. No whale ever popped up in that spot. we were pranked by a whale , brilliant!
My old computer crashed on me so I don't have any pictures of them actually bubble feeding anymore. These are the only pics i have of whales from my trip.
