Italian and passionate about our seas and oceans, Lorenzo Terraneo is much more than a photographer. He screams about the state of our fish stocks in a vehement, yet very scientific manner.

I like to eat fish very much. My favourites are Monkfish and Turbot. Both are sensational!

Lorenzo Terraneo gives us a few cold truths which I invite you to ponder whilst you peruse some of his extraordinary works.

img

30% of fish stocks have disappeared over the past 30 years.

88% of the fish stocks in Europe are being over-exploited.

Cod shoals in the North Atlantic have been reduced by 95%.

China consumes 1/3 of the world's fish.

img

Farmed fish contain huge amounts of chemical additives, hormones and drugs that are used to rapidly increase the weight of the animal, as well as avoiding harmful epidemics.
It often takes 3 kg of fish meal to produce 1 kg of salmon .
For 10 kg of farmed Sea Bass it takes 100 kg of sardines.

But I need my Omega-3 oils!

In 2010 Britain conducted a medical-scientific study of 19,000 people in which it was shown that the intake of Omega 3 is most efficient if it comes from plants rather than fish. In addition, Omega-3 oils occur at higher concentrations in vegetables and vegetable products:

A study conducted by the UN shows that every year the following are poured into the sea:

900,000 tonnes of phosphorus

200 million tonnes of nitrous chemicals

85,000 tonnes of heavy metals

200,000 tonnes of organochlorines

47,000 tonnes of polycyclic hydrocarbons

img

635,000 tonnes of crude oil spill from ships in the Mediterranean Sea each year.

img

100 million sharks and 8,000 whales are killed each year in drift nets ... by mistake!

img

Our Seas and Oceans are bio-diversities which clearly need a more balanced approach to their exploitation. I would like to keep eating my Monkfish and Turbot and other fish besides. If the practice of fishing continues unchecked and the abuse of our environment through turning a blind eye to malpractice is not stamped out, then we have a problem. I suspect we already have a problem far greater than even Lorenzo is aware of.

Witnesses on steemit are your assurance of confidence in the system.

When you vote for witnesses, think about someone less obvious:

Listed at No. 53 is @timcliff, not even appearing on the list because you can only see to number 50. You have to write his name in the box! One for the scrutineers. @timcliff is a really good steemmate of mine, a very trustworthy and dependable guy who thinks for himself and for you.
Gandalf is No.17, the person who gave me a realisation that despite all the fake names, we have humans; he is a techy looking after security. He is listed as @gtg but he is known by his Mum and on Steemit Chat as Gandalf!

So, go to https://steemit.com/~witnesses - you need your authorisation password

And be sure to include 17 @gtg & 53 @timcliff

Meantime follow @ebryans

Namaste!

With much gratitude to @son-of-satire for my new gif – very swanky it is too!

@jaki01, thank you so much - there is more that we don't know about our oceans than our solar system, I fear! Then there is probably more that we don't know that we don't know!
Thanks again. Namaste!

These are awesome pics..and thanks for those info. Shared in facebook :)

Thank you @immarojas, much appreciated!

You're welcome :)

Fantastic photos - and I thank you to speak about the pollution of the oceans as well! Resteemed!

Thanks for your work here Ed. As a vegan I enjoyed the bit about Omega-3 oils and wonder how it is that most fish eaters still don't know this? There is an interesting documentary (now 7 years old) on what we are doing to the fish in our ocean. Here is the trailer:

I shall check it out - I have long been an advocate of caring for the oceans ever since I watched Jacques Cousteau as a child. The Calypso and the adventures were startling! Now we find Nudibranchs at 8,000 ft. deep ...
Meanwhile the foodchain is being battered having knock-on effects of catastrophic proportions. When they reintroduced the wolf to Yellowstone Park the system recovered. We cannot see the effects of no wolves in the oceans!
Thank you for your kind words as ever!
Namaste!

He is excellent thanks for sharing ebryans love these odd underwater creatures, upped.

Thanks, my friend - kind words as ever!
