Travel Photography Tip - Lightning on Penang Island

Travel Photography Tip

When we get to travel, the photos that attracted you to the place are not always so easy to emulate once your are there. Most of us do not take a load of gear as pro/amateur photographers tend to. Even if you may not bring a tripod you can prop your camera up and should be able to get at least a 30" second exposure as I did here while in Malaysia on the island of Penang.

Long exposure can be really interesting not just at night time, but that's the focus of this image clearly as you can see the lights of the ships on the horizon.

Edited RAW file using CaptureONE and Lightroom for processing:

Shot using a neutral color profile (RAW file):

(so this is what I saw that evening (on the screen) when it was basically pitch dark out besides the lightning and the ship lights)

Shot with Sony A7r and an old 21mm Olympus 3.5
I did not use any lightning triggering device, I simply took many exposures and caught a few that had multiple strikes, of course, you can use a lightning trigger device if you don't want to be bothered with shooting many frames and potentially missing good shots, but my gear bag was already at 45 lbs, so sometimes you have to draw the line on what you bring along.

I like the border on the first one. Also nice comparison between the two shots. Did you create the border in Lightroom?

Indeed sometimes when I'm out there seeing this drab looking shot it's a bit uninspiring in the moment... so it's good to get a decent result in the end - sort of like shooting film in that respect. The borders are generated using Nik Collection - Color Efex 4 which was recently purchased by Google and now is available free of change: https://www.google.com/nikcollection/

excellent !

thank you for explaining and breaking down the process
