What is photography?

Life.
Feelings.
Sensations.
Interpretations of the World.
Opinions.
Creativity.

A 3-D World in 2-D

Each camera transforms reality.
Be aware of this
but remember
that limitations
foster creativity.

Taking good pictures does not depend on technical knowledge or expensive equipment. These are not difficult to master.

True mastery depends
on thought, experience, sensibility, and creativity.

Composition & Balance

Composition

The arrangement of visual elements.

Balance

Interaction of these visual components.

A photographer has full control of these elements. Break the “rules” to create your vision.

Leverage the camera’s existing features to express yourself.

Don’t just use the automatic setting!

Shutter Speed

Shutter speed, also known as “exposure time,” is the length of time a camera shutter is open to expose light into the camera sensor.

It is responsible for creating dramatics effects by either freezing action or blurring motion.

High shutter speeds freeze action

Low shutter speeds create an effect called “motion blur”

Shutter speeds are typically measured in fractions of a second
⁃ 1/4 second is long
⁃ 1/1000 of a second is short

Aperture

Think of this like the iris of an eye. You can open and close the aperture to control how much light enters.

WorkshopdeFotografiaExosphere-Maio2014.00864120.md.jpg
Aperture is expressed
in f-numbers known as
“f-stops.” A smaller f-stop means a larger aperture, while a larger f-stop means a smaller aperture.

ISO

ISO is the level of sensitivity of your camera to available light.
Always try to stick to the lowest ISO of your camera whenever possible.
The lower the ISO, the less sensitive it is to the light, while a higher ISO increases the sensitivity of your camera.

Depth of Field

The area of the image
that appears sharp.
A large f-number (ex: f/32)
will bring all foreground and background objects in focus. A small f-number (ex: f/1.4) will isolate the foreground from the background by making the foreground objects sharp and the background blurry.
