We've now come to understand why they stuck with us despite our lacks. They we're the better ones, the better lovers, and it fulfilled them. It was for their own good. Proved their own worth. They put themselves on a pedestal, making us believe the words they've never said but have always implied. We now understand. It was not only love that they sought, but also our constant incompetence as a partner that fed them confidence. Every person they share their story to is going to empathize, agreeing with them of how much of a victim they were. People will know how we let our pride take over us, how we rolled our eyes, how stupid we are for not reciprocating what they gave. People will hear the stories of why we walked out, how we can ignore them for days. People will agree that it's us that lost something irreplaceable, something that we will regret. People will wonder in awe for how long they had to put up with us, how pathetic everything was. But no, people won't get to hear the stories of how we get mad at them for smoking in fear of their asthma attacks, how we never set out rules because we've always trusted them, how we randomly want to go out for dinner to spend time. How we convince them to go out drinking with us, how they got drunk and how we took care of them, slightly clumsy. The way we caress their hand and how we learned to say sorry. They will never hear about how we cared in our own ways, how we blurt out stupid jokes, sing cheesy love songs, correct their silly mistakes for fun and let out witty dance moves. How I missed you terribly at times.. And they will never hear about how easy it was for me to let you go because I cared so much, I'd rather hurt you now.. than hurt you always.
