Sailing into the Week
A ship is not rigged until she is provided with all the spars, sails and cordage required to move and control the hull. The straight or curved pieces of wood or metal, called davits, from which the boats carried along the bulwarks are hung, belong to the rigging. All are fastened directly or indirectly to the hull, and all are required to complete her clothing.
Only a few of the ropes on a ship are actually called ropes, the rest of them are called lines and have a different use. If you want to know more sailing and nautical terms, go here.
As the whole of the rigging is divided into standing and running, so a rope forming part of the rigging is divided into the standing part and the fall. The standing part is that which is made fast to the mast, deck or block. The fall is the loose end or part on which the crew haul. The block is the pulley through which the rope runs. Standing in sea language means fixed thus the standing part of a hook is that which is attached to block, chain or anything which is to heave the hook up, with a weight hanging to it; the part opposite the point. Tackle is the combination of ropes and blocks; the combination of cables and anchors constitutes the ground tackle.
The function of all cordage may be said to be to pull, for the purpose either of keeping the masts in their places or of moving spars and sails. source
A flower. Always.
The shadow of night caressing my soul.
The stillness in my heart, as the sweetest of dreams gently kiss me goodnight.
Your loveliness will forever be engraved on my soul.
And just like that, these musings are done. Just so you know, although much sun and shine was used up today, I can guarantee that there is still a little left in my heart. Have a most fabulous evening!
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered,
"where does it hurt?"
it answered,
"everywhere"
"everywhere"

Well I always enjoy all things nautical. Yeah these bad boys are a bit to big to tool around with a friend or 2. I would be happy as a clam with a 31 foot Catalina. Such a beauty she is, inside and out. Owned, designed and built in the US. I included the link in case you wanted to get a head start on the Old Guy's Christmas present. Of course if you think that is a bit too generous, step it down a bit but for the love of Gawd dont forget I do have Amazon links hahahah!

Tall ship for a tall man, no? It made perfect sense in my head. I think you should ask your wife to buy you the Catalina! I am sure she wouldn't deny you anything you wanted, am I right or what?
Of course, I hear tell that your link has all sorts of goodies on it! This chick won't click, otherwise, she may want to buy something.
Thanks for stopping by and I do hope Santa gets you that Catalina! I hear tell that this year the sky is the limit, so, Santa better open those purse strings a little wider! Christmas isn't only for kids!
Have a great week ahead!

Cool photos and lots of information my dear.
With all that knowledge in my mind I would be able to sail away right now - but, I hope you will not test me because I do not even know most expressions in German 😉

One of my nephews got a gig working on a renewed sailing ship,
Authentically restored, called the "Barba Negra" or
Black Beard.
It didn't last long for him; he is an asshole, but I got a close up
Look at the ship from the dock a few times.
Great post @dswigle.

I was on the ship and it is pretty cool and restored also. I am amazed they sailed these around the world!
Thanks for the upvote and resteem

It really IS hard to imagine being cooped up for a long time in such small spaces with a comparatively lot of men, with nothing to do at times but lay around.
I know that there was work to be done, but I've also read there were long periods when they were in the 'doldrums' (a real condition) when there was no wind to speak of and they were in dire straits.
What a bummer.
Thanks @dswigle for the tip.
Thank you for the resteem @pixresteemer! Much appreciated! Have a most wonderful night!

Awesome. Is this info you learned on your vacay, or do you sail regularly? There's an awful lot here for you to have just learned it all. I love this.
May you more often than not have a enough space between yourself and another's body odor.
I was born and raised on the water and always had a boat or three. ;) I did pull a phrase off the internet (also sourced) that I knew some of it, but, not al and their explanation was so much better.
It happens. Hey, lady! How are you today? What will you be doing for Thanksgiving? Thank you for stopping and saying hello!
Hahaha! Space and body odor... enough said! LOL

Honey bunch you just tipped me twice. You a bit tipsy?
Thanksgiving will be at a friend's house this year. I'm very happy to not be the hostess for once! You?
I thought I was a sailor in my youth, but I did not know 90% of what you put in this post. I sailed on a lake though. This boat would have been ridiculous there. Any boat with a jib was a big boat.
I actually tipped you once, but, sometimes it glitches and does it twice and even three times. LOL It's all good. :)
Well then it was my lucky day. xoxoxoxoxoxo
Haha! Indeed! :)
oh jeez - and thanks for the tip(sies)!
You know it is my pleasure!
