Is it really necessary to have a dedicated lens to shoot macro?

I think the Answer is partially yes, if we hard bound by definition of macro photography. But similar close up photographs can be taken using a simple smartphone camera as well. We can combine some cheaply available attachment lenses to get even more closure to the subject and get some stunning pictures. And now a days, Amazon and other sites carry a variety of such products to get the job done.

You can get macro with normal lenses by using reversing rings, extension tubes or front lens attachments. certainly you can get very close with some smartphones to simulate macro. The previously used definition of macro is that the subject is life size on the frame., though many "macro" lenses do not achieve that.

Yes, lens reversal is one of the easiest options. Extension tubes and front attachment like Raynox DCR are cost effective options. 1:1 macro is achievable by dedicated lenses only at macro focal distance only.
