Photographer's paradox

Photography is rather interesting activity to perform in terms of emotions. You’re trying to do your best to capture the most delightful moment of all.

Apparently sometimes you have to take hundreds of pictures and then to choose a few that you really adore.

Despite of the fact that people tell about simplicity of a taking a picture, it doesn’t really mean that it is easy.

I believe there are certain emotional conflicts that each and every photographer can encounter whenever he goes.

The biggest and the most significant one is a choice between taking a picture and letting the moment sink in inside your body.

Think about that for a moment. You carry your camera around, it is always available for you. And one day you decided to meet with your friends and spent the whole evening with them. Pretty ordinary situation.

You hang out the whole night, you have fun and then it comes a time when you look at this beautiful sunrise. You’re stunned at how beautiful it is, it take your breath out. You know the feeling, right?

After a couple of minutes you realize that you have a camera with you, and you want to take a shot. But deep down in your heart you experience resistance.

You have 2 options that you can choose from:

  • Option A – to let the moment stay as it is, to enjoy the beauty of environment, to feel the presence and energy of your friends and just simply be satisfied.
  • Option B – to take your camera and take a couple of shots because who knows when you will ever see that again.

You’re dividing yourself, you’re hesitating, release stress or feel nervousness. But why it is so complicated?

The reason for that I suppose is because the feeling that triggers to take a photograph is too sensitive. You’re afraid to miss the moment so you capture it. You’re afraid to miss something really important in your life so you capture it. You’re afraid not to share your experience with others so you capture it.

But in the process of capturing by our camera so often we forget about capturing by our soul.

I’ve seen so many people that just take several pictures and move on. They treat it like a job. They don’t live a moment, they consume it. And it is so weird. You have to live a real life, and not the other way.

So what do you do when you have only one chance of being in particular place?

Assume you went to Himalayas and found a really rare and gorgeous flower or forbidden building or whatever you’re interested in. You do realize that you won’t have an opportunity to see it ever again. Evidently you will take a photo of it.

But please, don’t remember to capture this flower in your mind, heart and soul. You’ll be amazed at how different you’ll look at your life afterwards. You’ll have thousands of real memories, and those photos will remind you how it felt.

On the other side, if you don’t let the moment sink in, it will be 10 times harder to recollect the emotions that moment brought to you.

Besides, sometimes there are situations when you have no time to think about holding a camera in your hand. The moment is so intense and happens so fast, you have no choice. So my advise to you - forget about photos and just absorb.

Anyways, I hope you got the idea that our life is always based on a choice. Most of the time it is related to certain emotions so the only way not to regret afterwards is to do what you think is right. It can be applied to everybody, no matter who you are.
