5 excuses people have not to travel. What is yours?
I believe our life is a combination of different types of experiences that we encounter every single day. The most important is to remember that everything counts: the good and the bad. No matter what happened in your life, it is still an experience, from which you can learn something.
In that regard, traveling is one of the easiest ways to get your emotional state changed in a flash, and there is no doubt about it.
When you get out of your own house, you are able to find thing that weren’t presented in front of your eyes before. You can discover new territories and learn a lot about yourself as well.
Humanity aspect probably has the biggest impact of all. You can meet absolutely unique people that surprisingly are willing to share their life with you. That’s what I like the most I suppose.
I love to travel and currently I prefer this activity over the other ones. At the same time I don’t understand people who have the opposite point of view. I value each opinion and never judge anybody so I’m just curious why people simply do not travel?
By spending some time, I tried to answer this question by myself in advance so that you don’t have to come up with your own excuse :)
I found 5 major problems that people may have that prevent them from traveling:
The lack of money
This can be a very serious issue for lots of people, especially from developing countries. It feels frustrating when you don’t have finances not just to travel, but to buy simple things, such as food and clothes. I totally understand that and don’t even try to push people who are in this position.
However for those who have an opportunity and ability to move to different place for some time, why not to take a chance and do so?
It is so weird to see people staying at home at weekends, rather than go and see something new and inspiring. People develop destructive habits of playing computer games or watching TV or sleeping all day long the entire day. I have no idea how it is a better alternative.
The only thing that I consider more valuable than travel is spending a significant time with your family and your friends. But you can take them with you on some occasions.
Besides, by traveling I don’t necessarily imply going to another country and spend tons of money on tickets, accommodation and food. I believe it is not necessary. In fact, there are dozens of unknown places in your own country, trust me. You just have to look for them.
The lack of time
This can be understandable as well. You may have really tough schedule even of your days off. But don’t you think if you don’t have free time to spend with your friends and your family on weekends, it is not the right job for you.
I’m serious. I’ve read lots of books and heard lots of real examples of people who thought that they own their business. But when they count the number of hours they are spending on the business, it turned out business was owning them.
I believe that no matter who you are, you deserve some time for yourself and your loved once. You are a human being, not a machine, correct?
Recently I met quite interesting girl who told me that if your job is preventing you from traveling, you should consider changing this job. It so hilarious and at the same time right if one of your major values in life is an adventure.
The lack of experience
To be honest, traveling can be challenging, stressful and even overwhelming. Thus if you haven’t done that before, you might be freaked out of everything.
On the other side, how can you gain an experience if you don’t try it? You can dream about going to a certain place or you can stand and watch at the exact same place. Those two are completely different realities.
The one leaves an excitement of anticipation, the other leaves an excitement of exploration and manifestation. They are very close to each other but if you think about it, distinct.
So if you are afraid, just do it. Do it with somebody else who has already done it, and you’ll be fine.
The lack of a partner
Some people think that in order to travel, you need to do it with your friends. Life shows that it’s not always achievable and necessary.
Of course there are certain benefits to have somebody with you but what if you have nobody who wants to travel? What if they don’t want to travel to the place that you want? Seriously, there can be lots of what ifs…
So don’t stop because you can’t find your travel buddy. On the contrary, go out and explore, you’ll find that person faster than you thought.
The lack of desire
This one is huge. If a person don’t want something or don’t like something, he/she won’t do it, agreed?
This problem applies to everything, traveling is not an exception. The main reason, as I see it, is the difference in our values and priorities.
For instances, let’s compare 2 different sets of values of 2 different people:
- Set №1: adventure, freedom, variety, energy, love, health.
- Set №2: security, stability, certainty, compassion, health.
It is obvious, that the first person will likely to go and travel because his primary values are adventure and freedom. You don’t even have to negotiate a place to go because no matter what you pick, he will be charged up with novelty and variety of activities to do.
At the same time, second example shows quite the opposite. Security is rather safe emotion, as well as a certainty. Both of them involve comfort to be the main driving force of your life. There are thousands of people who live by those values and I cannot deny their choice of not traveling.
What it the most interesting though is how those values are formed. I can write the whole post on this but usually they are formed unconsciously after certain events. We live and not even aware of their presence in our lives, and frequently they can move us down, instead of lifting us up.
Anyways, traveling is important. At the end of our lives those memories will be really pleasurable and worthwhile. I’m challenging you to go out and travel to whatever the place your soul finds appealing.
Your friend, Dmitriy :)
