The snow is perfect right now. It's only about ankle deep so it's actually nice to walk through without snow shoes.
Oh man that sounds awesome! I love being able to see all the different footprints in the snow from all the animals. You get to have a tiny bit of a glimpse into where they come from and where they go and where they stop etc. I'd say winter hiking is for sure one of my favourite activities :D
I'm still trying to get the courage to go out on a legit solo overnight winter backpacking trip (or to find someone that's willing to come with me) but I don't have a ton of gear so I'm slowly working towards acquiring some.
For now I'm sticking to short trips through the awesome river valley trails in my city (not the same as being out in the wilderness but it sure beats not going at all).
