Trip to France - Part 28 - La Croisette, Cannes
Cannes sea front promenade, with the beach and pedestrianized walkway on one side of the street and designer shops and luxury hotels on the other side.
Cannes has a sandy beach (unlike Nice which has a pebble beach). The beach has free, public areas as well as private areas where you have to pay an admission charge to access. There is a free section of the beach by Palais des Festivals and there is a ramp to access it.
On the beach side there is a wide, flat, pedestrianised walkway which has quite a lot of seats. Some is fixed seating but there is also the blue, metal chairs that are moveable. When I visited I found that at busy times, ie weekend and sunset, it was quite difficult to find an empty chair. It is dotted with kiosks that sell food and drink. The sea front promenade is a great place to stroll, sit, relax and people watch. There's often also a cruise ship and private yachts on the horizon.
Near Palais des Festivals is a small, children's amusement area with a couple of rides and is very family friendly, and the start of Le Petit Train de Cannes.
On the opposite side of the street are the designer shops, luxury hotels and apartments. Walking from Palais des Festivals you walk by a number of luxury hotel: The Majestic, La Malmaison which is now an art gallery which is the former tearoom for the original Grand Hotel, JW Marriot with its casino. The InterContinental Carlton with its domes at either end, this was a film location in Alfred's Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief and in its garden is the Palme D’Or statue, a golden angel statue holding the Palme D’Or (golden palm) symbol of the Cannes Film Festival. The last big luxury hotel is the. Martinez, an art deco building, and afterwards there are mainly luxury apartment blocks. The road continues to the Yacht Harbour.
At night the palm trees are illuminated and the pavement of the walkway on the beach side is illuminated. I have to say I found the path quite dark at night.

Thank you for introducing Cannes to us. I've never been there and only heard about it because of the festival that is held there. I also didn't know that there is a pebble beach in Nice. I was planning to go there last year but at the end changed my opinion and went to Barcelona so it was a good decision as I wanted to have sand instead of pebbles.
