Roofs of Reykjavik
Roofs of Reykjavik
My Travel Stories and Photography
Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, is full of surprises for me. Although it seems sterile and somewhat boring, it surprised me more than once with its appearance and its unusual beauty.
A few days ago I mentioned the largest church in Iceland and at the same time the tallest building in this country - Hallgrimskirkja Cathedral. Its 75-meter high bell tower is as if made to look at Reykjavík in a new and different way.
From the air, Reykjavik reveals all its beauty. Colorful buildings with even more colorful roofs line up as they descend towards the waters of the Atlantic. In the distance you can see the mountain Esja, usually covered with snow regardless of the season.
Reykjavík buildings usually have a ground floor and one floor, rarely two. Strong winds and a harsh climate determine this standard. The buildings do not have many decorations, but that is why they are painted in different bright and pastel colors. This colorfulness makes Reykjavik cheerful even when the weather turns it gray.
They say that the scene of the sunset over the waters of the Atlantic viewed from the bell tower of Hallgrimskirkja church is unforgettable. Unfortunately, during my last stay in Iceland, the sunset was around midnight, so I didn't see that scene 😂
