Deranged Photography Macro Monday - A "Mosquito Hawk"

Growing up, I always knew of the crane fly as a mosquito hawk or a mosquito eater. They aren't a giant mosquito either.

As the name implies, they are just a fly (that happens to resemble a big scary mosquito).

The crane fly doesn't have a mouth so they can't bite people or animals and they don't sting either. In the larvae stage they can be detrimental to the lawn but once it becomes an adult it may only occasionally eat nectar and only lives for ten to fifteen days. I spotted this "mosquito hawk" yesterday on a lavender plant. It was there all day and it looked like it was getting that occasional nectar "fix". I checked the lavender plant this morning and, evidently, it had moved on...one way or the other!
