I feel that's the deep question you were asking.
Those two words are often synonymous but are philosophically different.
To be vain implies other thoughts in relation to the self and outer representation. Where as narcissism is devoid of any kind of appreciation of others understanding of you and therefore less introspective.

I say you're not being vain because there's no disunity between yourself and the opinions of other. I this way you have a deep appreciation of aesthetics, the fine things.
