Brahmakamal (Epiphyllum Oxypetalum)
My real photograph of Brahmakamal flower which has bloomed in my garden.
Brahmakamal is an interesting and unique plant species. It belongs to the cactaecea family and commonly known as "Queen of the Night", "Lady of the Night". To grow the plant one has to sow the leaf.
The unique feature of this plant is that its flower blooms at late night and that too very rarely.
The flowering season of the plant is generally from start of monsoon to end (June to October). The flowers are very large and fragnant with resemblance to a lotus.
The blooming of the flower starts from 7pm and continues till 11.00pm and remain open throughout the night. It closes in the morning before sunrise.
In India the plant is revered and worshipped. It is related to a story of lord Brahma emerged from Vishnu's naval in a lotus flower.
It is also believed that this sacred flower does not bloom in all houses and the houses where it blooms are considered lucky. There is a belief that Brahmakamal should be gifted and should not be bought from market.
