Daily Nature Fix: Alaskan Glacier (Original Photos)

in #photography8 years ago

Ever since I started traveling, one of the number one things I wanted to do was see a glacier.  Any glacier.  I wanted to see one in person before they all vanish, so we booked a trip to Alaska.  We were lucky enough to see several glaciers on the trip (knock that off the bucket list), but none of them quite compared to the awesome Margery Glacier in Glacier Bay National Park.  This thing was a beauty.  21 miles of it snakes it's through the mountain canyons until it crashes in to the bay.

The face of the glacier stands 250 feet from the water surface.  While watching this massive hunk of ice, I experienced one of the coolest things, to date: "white thunder".  It's the sound made when chucks of the glacier break off and fall to the water (known as calving).  I can't really describe the sound, so I won't put much effort into trying.  It sort of sounds like massive stone boulders banging against solid bedrock stone, but it's the way that the sound surrounds you that truly makes it amazing.  The sound bounces around all of the cliffs and mountains around you.  Luckily, you hear it pretty steadily as the ice is constantly calving from the glacier and making new icebergs that float away.

Aside from the sounds, the Margerie Glacier was visually stunning as well.  So many shades of blue along with striking black ash veins. It was beautiful. A true masterpiece of the natural world.
