As I mentioned in the post, according to some sources, the mushroom is edible but has poor culinary quality and other sources (equally reliable) claim that it's not edible at all and even poisonous.
I have also encountered quite a few former immigrants from the former Soviet Union who reported collecting some controversial mushrooms that we here in Israel do not collect for fear of poisoning.
These reports led me to the conclusion that there is a reasonable situation that in different parts of the world the composition of the mushroom varies according to the composition of the soil, and therefore such a situation can occur.
