Lisbon - Part 3
Hello my friends. Here is the third part of my trip to Lisbon. I hope you like it.
Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (Jeronimos Monastery) or Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Belém (Monastery of Santa Maria de Belém) is a Portuguese monastery of the Order of St. Jerome built in the 16th century. It is located in Belém. It has, since 2016, the status of national pantheon. The construction began with an initiative of King Manuel I. Mosteiro dos Jerónimos has been classified as a National Monument since 1907 and in 1983 it was classified as a Cultural heritage of all humanity by UNESCO along with the Torre de Belém. On July 7, 2007 it was elected as one of the seven wonders of Portugal. It's today one of the most important tourist attractions in Portugal.
Near this monastery there is a pretty garden, called Jardim da Praça do Império (Garden of the Square of the Empire).
It is located between Avenida da Índia and Rua de Belém, near the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos . It was built in 1940. Previously, the area was a beach, known as "Restelo beach".
Its central lake presents on the outside the Coats belonging to or attributed to Navigators during the period of the Discoveries. Its gardens have 30 coats of arms representing the 18 Portuguese districts, the archipelagos and the former colonies.
Near to this Monastery exist a wonderful tower, called Torre de Belém (Belém Tower). This tower is located in Belém. On the right bank of the Tejo river. This monument is an icon of the architecture of the reign of Manuel I of Portugal. On the four floors of the tower, the Governor's Room, the Kings Room, the Audience Hall, and finally the Chapel with its fifteenth-century vaults remain. Torre de Belém is all surrounded by decorations of the coat of arms of Portugal, including inscriptions of crosses of the Order of Christ in the bulwark windows. It was classified by UNESCO as World Heritage since 1983. It was also elected as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal on July 7, 2007.
There is a small beach around the tower where you can wet your feet.
And the third part of this magnificent trip to Lisbon ends. Tomorrow I will make another publication about this beautiful city and what it has to offer us.
I hope you enjoyed :)
