When people think of Colorado, the first image that almost always comes to mind is the Rocky Mountains. But there are plenty of places worth visiting in the Centennial State that isn't at an insane elevation. One such spot is Calhan Painted Mines, a site that is both geological and archeological in nature. The rocks vary wildly in color, with red, orange, yellow and white formations gracing the landscape. For those seeking an alternative to the mountains, perhaps due to a sensitivity to the altitude, the painted mines are a great option to consider.

You're right. The Colorado Rocky Mountains pushed through an deep and interesting layers of sediment. So both sides (East and West Slopes) of the Rockies have extremely interesting sedimentary rock layers.

Some contain dinosaur fossils, but they are are all intriguing.

Geologists have given each of the layers names. It is fun to see how the layers appear in different areas. What are the layers at Calhan Painted Mines?
