Duke Farms #1 - Jumbo Acorns
Spent a nice afternoon walking around at Duke Farms and these are the some of the largest acorns I've ever seen.

Those look like acorns from a Bur Oak. That is a nice oak and they are tasty acorns, if you process them to get the tannin out. They are in the white oak family, with the rounded tips on their leaves. Those acorns grow that big in one season! The black oak family, with pointed tips on their leaves, takes two years to grow their acorns, so there is more tannin in them. Bur oak acorns are big enough to make it worthwhile to process them to eat. They are real food!
Take them out of their shell and put them into a blender. Chop them up and drain out the water. Keep doing that until the water runs clear. They should be pretty finely chopped at that point. They are good in cookies! : )
Wow, thanks for all the detailed info @haphazard-hstead!!! I saw these acorns yesterday at Duke Farms in NJ, but I didn't take any of them home with me. I would have never thought you could eat them. When I go back (which I plan to do) I'll take some and give it a try. Thanks.
