Urban Exploring Detroit: Brewster-Douglass Housing Projects デトロイトの公営住宅街廃墟探検 2013

These pictures are from my urban exploring of Brewster Douglass Housing Projects in Detroit, MI during the Summer of 2013.
写真は２０１３年の夏にブルースターダグラス公営住宅街で廃墟探検した時の物です。


Brewster Douglass Housing Projects were the biggest housing projects owned by Detroit. Built between 1935-1952, it consisted of six 14 floor high rises and and two 6 story low rises. By the time these pictures were taken, 2 of the high rises were already demolished. The rest of the buildings were demolished in 2014.
１９３５～５２年に建築されたブルースターダグラスはデトロイトで一番でかい公営住宅プロジェクトで、６軒の１４階建高層住宅ビルと２軒の６階建住宅ビルがありました。この写真を撮った時にはもう高層ビルの２軒は取り壊されていました。

I think that these buildings represented a failure of public housing projects in the US. The idea was flawed in the first place by focusing on segregating the African American Community from the White. Then there's the issue of no one taking ownership of these public housings. Since the residents have no ownership, they did not take care of the place and since the Government workers don't live there, they didn't bother to take care of it either. The projects just fell into a state of despair and by the 1970s it became a crime ridden run down ghetto.
この公営住宅街はアメリカでの公営住宅プロジェクトの失敗を表すものだと思います。まず最初の間違えは、黒人と白人を分ける為に作られたこと。もう一つの間違えは、この住宅は公営なので誰も手入れをする責任を取らなかったこと。居留民はこの住宅は自分の物ではないので、手入れをしません。公務員たちはここに住む事は無いので、ビルがどうなろうと気にしません。そんな感じで１９７０年代までにはスラム街となってしまいました。
