Gros Ventre River

A wintry, aerial perspective of the Gros Ventre River (pronounced grow-vont) as it flows through the canyon below Lower Slide Lake in the Bridger Teton National Forest just outside of Jackson Hole and Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. It flows from its headwaters in the Gros Ventre Wilderness that forms much of the eastern boundary of Jackson Hole. The freestone river alternates between cottonwood lined bottom, expansive meadows, and narrow canyons. This incredible region is largely free of development and is a critical wildlife habitat of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. It is difficult to state the importance of public lands that help preserve wild ecosystems like this. Most of the Gros Ventre River is designated as a Wild and Scenic River as part of the Snake River Headwaters which helps to ensure it will remain a pristine watershed.
