Do you struggle with how to store / share and keep track of an ever growing library of media? In today’s digital media world we take photos, video, record our music more and more media. Your media is irreplaceable if you lose it due to computer failure you will be heart broken. It has happened and will happen disk failure, accidental deletions, Windows computer crashes, etc. Have an extra computer around not doing anything? What provides all of this and more you ask? I tried several different solutions on my journey to tackle my media. Some where ok some just were terrible but I just wasn’t really very satisfied with the features. Well I I recently started using something that has proven to be the answer to all of these things and a lot more. Me being a computer nerd I know a lot about technology and I was impressed to find such a great product available for free for handling your media needs.
Freenas is based on FreeBSD unix. If you are not familiar with FreeBSD it is based off the original unix code from the University of Berkeley and is a solid stable operating system. On top of FreeBSD they utilize some advanced features and make it easy to use with a web front end. From a technology point of view this brings powerful unix features to help you store your media.

Here is screen shot of my system. It shows volumes for each type of media and services I use to share and make use of my data. It has lots of plugins to provide everything you need and some things you don’t even know you need yet. You can stream your movies with Plex or Emby, Listen to your music any where any time with Subsonic it has a free phone so you can use your music on the go. Down load new stuff automatically with Bit Torrent and have your server add it to your collection. You can even have your ownCloud basicly becoming your own Apple or Goggle provider. There is some many things that are possible with the plugins I can’t begin to describe them all. Check it out for your self. It is free it is awesome you will be impressed too.
